How Is Buzz Guard Different From Commercial Spot-On Insect Repellents?
Buzz Guard contains pure essential oils and neem seed oil, which are natural, plant-based ingredients. Although originally developed for dogs, Earth Heart was fortunate to learn during field testing that the product also works well for humans and horses.
Here are some of the great features of Buzz Guard:
Easy to use: Simply spray Buzz Guard onto your hands to massage the dog’s outer ears, back of the head, abdomen, legs and tail; or in less infested areas, spray on a bandana placed around the dog’s neck.
Effective: Buzz Guard has been favorably field-tested by a variety of dog lovers and professionals to help improve your dog's outdoor comfort when insect pests such as mosquitoes, flies, fleas, ticks and no-see-ums are present.
Water-based: Buzz Guard won’t stain clothing or make fur sticky.
Safe: The spray is family friendly and puppy friendly (from 8 weeks), packaged in a BPA free container, and made in the USA.
Economical: There are approximately 600 mists in a 2-ounce bottle, which equals about 2¢ per mist
Ingredients: water, polysorbate 20; neem seed oil; pure essential oils of citronella, fir, geranium, rosewood, basil and myrrh; potassium sorbate.
How Do Insect Repellents Work?
Insect repellents work by masking the scent of humans and animals, or by mimicking a scent that insects typically avoid. Because insect repellents are applied directly to clothing, skin or fur, controversy over the safety of commercial insecticides, particularly those containing DEET, has led to increasing interest in the development of natural insect repellents.
How Effective Are Natural Insect Repellents?
Reports issued by the Center for Disease Control, note that certain natural substances, such as essential oil of lemon eucalyptus, have been shown to be as effective as DEET in repelling mosquitoes.
There are several essential oils that can help with insect pests. To help with mosquitoes, flies, and no-see-ums, use pure essential oils of basil, citronella, clary sage, geranium, lemon, lemongrass, marjoram, the mints, myrrh and patchouli. Fleas seem particularly averse to essential oils such as clary sage, cedarwood, citronella, grapefruit, lemon and lemon eucalyptus, mints and myrrh. And the essential oils that help repel ticks include bay, geranium, juniper berry, lavender, myrrh and rosewood.
Neem seed oil has been gaining popularity as a natural insect repellent. The oil is pressed from the fruits and seeds of Azadirachta indica, an evergreen tree native to India, where it has been traditionally used in remedies for a wide variety of skin problems.
Neem at just one or two percent of the total product is also an effective insect repellent. Although neem has a strong scent that some people find disagreeable, it masks the scent of the wearer and can prevent insects from landing. Essential oils used in combination with neem seed oil not only help the effectiveness of the blend, they also improve the scent.
Natural insect repellents containing plant-based ingredients such as neem and pure essential oils can be a safe and effective alternative to commercial pesticides. The reality is that insect-borne diseases can be a serious health risk to humans and their companion animals. Families may need to stock a variety of products, including natural repellents and chemical spot on treatments, to fit different situations and personal comfort levels. Another solution is to stay indoors for a few days until the swarms have passed, but this is not always practical.
Is Neem Seed Oil Safe?
The United States Environmental Protection Agency considers neem Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). Unlike commercial insecticides that indiscriminately kill insects, neem seed oil only affects insects that chew or suck. When neem seed oil is ingested by insects, the oil disrupts their normal functions. Some insects forget to eat, fly or lay eggs, or they may lay eggs that are sterile. Without food or larvae, the insects will die, leaving insect populations diminished.
How Often Is Buzz Guard Applied?
Reapplication varies depending on how many insects are present, and whether your companion animal gets wet. Customers have reported relief from mosquitoes, flies, fleas, ticks and no-see-ums between one and five hours.
What Do Customers Say About Buzz Guard?
We recently attended an event in an Illinois Forest Preserve. I applied Buzz Guard to my dog Sugar and watched all the bugs move away. Since the ingredients are safe, I used it too (except for my face, which is where I got the only bug bite of the day). With all the rain we’ve had, there will be lots of bugs this summer, and so we will definitely be using Buzz Guard on our walks.

Augie Dogie and I give four paws up for Buzz Guard. It works!! We’re in Southwest Florida and the flying bugs are awful, especially at sundown. I didn’t have any “Buzz” in my ears while Augie was walking me. The scent is very fresh, and because the product isn’t oily, it feels clean and light. The spray penetrated Augie’s fur with no problem at all.

We use Buzz Guard not only on the horses but ourselves. It is not greasy so it is great for humans too. I had it in my purse when we went to the 4th of July fireworks and when we started getting attacked by mosquitoes, I sprayed it on. It worked and we enjoyed the fireworks bug free. Thanks again and keep up the good products and work.

My dog Lucky and I love Buzz Guard. It smells good and has been effective against, fleas, mosquitoes, ticks and most insects. It is the only thing that works for no-see-ums when vacationing in Florida.
